How Do I Get a Quote for a JDM Engine?
A useful quote starts with your vehicle, not the engine. The trim tells the supplier what to look up; the engine code tells them what to match against.
What to provide, in order of usefulness
The first three items answer most questions on their own.
- The VIN. It identifies exactly what your vehicle was built with and removes nearly all ambiguity.
- Year, make, model and trim. This identifies the engine on almost every vehicle covered here. The trim is essential, not optional.
- Transmission type. Automatic or manual, and whether the car has a CVT.
- Drivetrain. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
- The stamped code from your current engine, if the car may have had an engine change.
- Whether the vehicle is subject to emissions testing where you live.
What a good quote includes
A price is the least informative part of a quote. What matters is the specification attached to it. A good quote tells you what engine variant is being offered, what is attached to it, what is not, what the warranty covers and what it costs to have it delivered or collected.
If any of those are missing, ask. The questions cost nothing and the answers save you from discovering something on delivery day that you could have settled beforehand.

Common questions
Can I get a quote without a VIN?
Yes, but it requires the year, make, model and trim at a minimum. The VIN is the fastest way to remove ambiguity, but well-sourced vehicle details are sufficient on most vehicles. The trim is the most important detail, because it often determines which engine your vehicle has.
How long does it take to get a quote?
That depends on the supplier and the engine. Common families with local stock can be quoted quickly. Harder-to-source families may take a day or two to locate and confirm. A quick quote on a family the supplier does not actually have in stock is less useful than a slower one on an engine that exists.
