Nissan CVT Buying Guide
The Nissan CVT is the single most important variable in a Nissan engine or transmission replacement. Getting it wrong is expensive and entirely avoidable.
Nissan's Continuously Variable Transmission is one of the most commonly replaced drivetrain components in the Phoenix market. It is fitted to a wide range of Nissan vehicles including the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, Sentra and Pathfinder, and it has a well-documented tendency toward premature failure.
The CVT is not a single part. It is a family of transmissions that vary by vehicle, by engine pairing, by model year and by torque capacity. Two CVTs that look identical from the outside can have different internals, different controllers and different compatibility requirements.

Why the CVT fails
The Nissan CVT uses a belt-and-pulley system rather than the gears found in a conventional automatic. The belt rides between two variable-diameter pulleys, and the ratio changes by moving the pulleys closer together or further apart.
The failure modes are well documented: the belt or chain wears prematurely, the pulleys score, the valve body develops pressure problems, and the transmission overheats. Heat is the primary enemy, and in Phoenix's sustained summer temperatures the CVT operates with less thermal margin than it would in a milder climate.
The symptoms include hesitation under acceleration, loss of power at highway speed, shuddering, whining noises, and in severe cases a complete loss of drive. Identifying the correct CVT
The CVT is identified by its part number, which is stamped on a label or plate on the transmission case. This is the definitive identification, just as the engine code is definitive for the engine.
Beyond the part number, the critical variables are the engine pairing (the torque capacity must match), the model year (internal revisions changed the valve body and the TCU calibration), and the drive configuration (FWD versus AWD).
Two CVTs with the same external appearance can have different valve bodies, different torque converter specifications, and different TCU calibrations. Using the wrong one can result in immediate failure or premature wear.
What to check before ordering
- Get a proper diagnosis. Confirm the CVT is what failed, not the engine.
- Confirm the vehicle year, model, trim and engine. These determine the CVT specification.
- If possible, obtain the CVT part number from the unit itself or from the vehicle's service records.
- Confirm the drive configuration. FWD and AWD vehicles use different CVT versions.
- Ask about the replacement unit's history. Was it removed from a running vehicle? What mileage was on the donor?
- Confirm the warranty terms specifically for the CVT. Some warranties treat the CVT differently from the engine.

Why do Nissan CVTs fail so often?
The CVT design uses a belt-and-pulley system that is sensitive to heat and contamination. In hot climates like Phoenix, the thermal stress on the CVT is higher than in milder regions. The specific failure modes include belt wear, pulley scoring and valve body pressure problems, all of which are accelerated by heat.
How much does a CVT replacement cost?
The cost varies by vehicle and whether you are using a remanufactured or used unit. The CVT itself is a significant line item, and the labour to remove and install it adds substantially. Getting a complete quote that includes the unit, the labour and any supporting parts (fluid, filters, seals) gives you the real number.
Can I convert my CVT to a conventional automatic?
That is a swap, not a replacement. It requires a different transmission, potentially different mounts, a different TCU, different wiring, and different calibration. It is technically possible on some platforms but involves significant engineering and is not a common path.
