The 2AZ-FE is an aluminium-block 2.4-litre four with VVT-i, built from 2000 to 2012 and fitted across Toyota’s highest-volume US models: the Camry from 2002 to 2011, the RAV4 from 2001 to 2008, the Highlander, the Camry Solara, and the Scion tC and xB.
Sheer volume is what makes it relevant here. There are an enormous number of these cars in the Valley, they are cheap enough that a dealer engine quote often exceeds the car’s value, and the used-engine supply is correspondingly deep. For a Camry owner facing a failed engine, this is usually a straightforward replacement rather than a project.
Two known issues drive a lot of the demand. The first is oil consumption on a range of model years, which is the reason many of these engines are replaced rather than repaired. The second is cylinder head bolt thread failure in the aluminium block on earlier units. A failure mode that generally ends the engine rather than being worth repairing.
Later production received revisions including a higher compression ratio and piston oil squirters, so a late unit is not identical to an early one even though both are stamped 2AZ-FE.
The two failure modes, and why they change your question
Oil consumption affects a range of 2AZ-FE model years and is frequently the reason one of these engines comes out of a car at all. That matters directly when buying a used replacement: an engine pulled from a donor vehicle for the same reason yours failed has not solved anything.
The second is cylinder head bolt thread failure. The block is aluminium, and on earlier units the head bolt threads can pull out of it. It generally ends the engine rather than being economically repairable.
Neither is a reason to avoid the engine (there are a great many good ones), both are reasons to ask a supplier what the donor vehicle’s history was and whether the block threads have been inspected. Those are answerable questions, and a supplier who cannot answer them is telling you something.
Later engines are not the same as early ones
Toyota revised the 2AZ-FE during its production run: a higher compression ratio, a revised intake cam profile and piston oil squirters among the changes: without changing the family code. Every one of them is stamped 2AZ-FE.
The practical consequence is that model year carries information the code does not. A late unit and an early unit are both "a 2AZ-FE" and are not quite the same engine, so the donor vehicle and its year are worth establishing rather than treating the code as sufficient.

One mainstream variant plus a hybrid relative that is not interchangeable with it.

- Atkinson-cycle hybrid variant, Camry Hybrid. Not interchangeable with the FE.
Identifying a 2AZ-FE
- The engine code is stamped on the block; the family designation is 2AZ-FE across the run.
- Later revisions raised compression and added piston oil squirters, but are not distinguished by a different family code. Model year and donor vehicle are how you tell them apart.
- The 2AZ-FE is distinct from the 2AZ-FXE hybrid variant used in the Camry Hybrid, which runs an Atkinson cycle and is not interchangeable.
A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed. What varies between 2AZ-FE units
These are the differences that decide whether two engines with the same family code are substitutes in a particular car.
- Camry, RAV4 and Highlander applications differ in accessory layout, mounts and wiring despite sharing the family code.
- The hybrid 2AZ-FXE is a different engine and should not be substituted for a 2AZ-FE.
- Because oil consumption and head bolt thread failure are the common failure modes, ask specifically what the donor vehicle’s failure history was and whether the block threads have been checked.
- Confirm the transmission (automatic and manual applications differ), whether your car is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive on RAV4 and Highlander.
