The Sentra is a compact car that spans a wider engine range than most buyers expect. Base models used the QR18DE and later the HR16DE, which are small-displacement four-cylinders with modest power. The SE-R Spec V, however, used the QR25DE, a 2.5-litre engine that shares its family code with the Altima four-cylinder but is not the same application.
The SE-R Spec V is the Sentra that generates the most engine replacement demand, because owners of that car bought it for the engine and tend to want to keep it running. The QR25DE in the SE-R is a higher-output variant with different internals than the base-model engine, and ordering based on "Sentra" alone can land you with the wrong unit. The seventh-generation Sentra from 2007 to 2012 used the MR20DE, and the eighth-generation from 2013 to 2019 used the turbocharged MR16DDT, which is a different engine again.

Later Sentras moved to the MR20DE and then the turbocharged MR16DDT, which are entirely different engines. Confirming which engine your Sentra has by the stamped code is the first step, and the CVT should be checked before committing to an engine replacement on any generation that has one.

Where Nissan Sentra orders go wrong
- The SE-R Spec V uses the QR25DE, which is a different engine from the base-model QR18DE or HR16DE. Confirm which engine your Sentra has before ordering.
- The CVT is fitted to many Sentras and should be checked before committing to an engine replacement. The same double-payment risk applies here as on the Altima.
- Sixth-generation and later Sentras use entirely different engine families. The generation and trim together determine the engine, not either one alone.
