Which J35 depends on the generation. The 1999–2004 cars use the J35A4, the 2005–2010 cars the J35A7, and later cars a range of J35Z variants. Intake and accessory layout differ across those.
Two things dominate the buying decision. Cylinder deactivation, Variable Cylinder Management, is present on some variants and is something a number of owners specifically want to avoid. And the J35 is timing-belt driven, so any used unit without documented belt service should be quoted with the belt, tensioner and water pump included in the installation.
The question that decides it is usually the transmission
Odyssey transmissions of certain model years have a reputation of their own, and a fresh engine in front of a failing transmission is money spent twice. Before committing to an engine, get a clear answer on the transmission’s condition.
If both need attention, that is not automatically a reason to give up on the van. These vehicles are frequently worth more to their owner than to the market: the seats, the space and the known history count for something a replacement vehicle would not have. But it should be a decision made with both numbers in front of you rather than one.
The J35 timing belt is part of the installation
Every J35 in the Odyssey is a timing-belt engine. The belt, tensioner and water pump are standard items for the installation, not optional extras. A used J35 without documented belt service should be quoted with all three included, because the labour to do them later means pulling the engine again.
This is the most common source of second failures on J-series replacements in the Odyssey. The belt and tensioner are inexpensive parts. The labour to access them is not, and a minivan that accumulates miles quickly will put those parts to work immediately.
What to have ready when you request an Odyssey engine
Generation first. The J35 variant changes between generations, and a unit from the wrong one will not run correctly without addressing the differences.
Whether the engine has variable cylinder management. Some Odyssey models include VCM, and the presence or absence of that system affects the valve train and the engine management. A replacement engine should match the configuration of the one being replaced.
Transmission condition. The Odyssey's transmission has its own failure profile, and it should be checked before committing to an engine replacement. A fresh engine behind a failing transmission is money spent twice.
Where Honda Odyssey orders go wrong
- Generation determines the J35 variant; a 2005 and a 2012 Odyssey are not the same engine.
- Cylinder deactivation is present on some variants. Ask before ordering if you want to avoid it.

- The Odyssey shares the J35 family with the Pilot and Ridgeline but not necessarily the same variant or accessory layout.
