Two different J-series engines across two generations, with the Type-S carrying the higher-output version of each.

The Acura TL used two different J-series V6 engines across its final two generations, and the Type-S performance variant makes the engine conversation more specific than a simple generation split. The third-generation TL (2004-2008) used the J32A3, a 3.2-litre V6; the fourth-generation (2009-2014) moved to the J37A4, a 3.7-litre unit.

The Type-S is the complication. The third-generation Type-S used a higher-output version of the J32A3; the fourth-generation Type-S used a higher-output J37A4. Those are not just different tunes but carry different internal components. A standard TL engine will physically fit a Type-S but will not produce the same output, and the engine management may require attention.

The fourth-generation TL also introduced SH-AWD, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, on certain trims. That system adds transfer case and driveshaft hardware that the front-wheel-drive cars do not have, and it affects the supporting components around the engine even though the engine itself is the same J37.

Type-S and standard are not the same engine

The Type-S used a higher-output version of each generation's engine, with different internal components and calibration. A standard TL engine will physically fit a Type-S but will not produce the same output, and the engine management may require attention. Confirm whether you are sourcing for a standard or a Type-S before ordering.

The fourth-generation TL also introduced SH-AWD on certain trims, which adds transfer case and driveshaft hardware. The engine itself is the same J37A4 between front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars, but the surrounding components differ and should be part of the conversation.

Where Acura TL orders go wrong

  • The J32A3 and J37A4 are different engines with different displacement; the generation decides which one you need.
  • Type-S models use higher-output versions of each generation's engine and are not simply tuned differently from the standard car.
  • SH-AWD models have additional drivetrain hardware that front-wheel-drive TLs do not have.
