JDM Engine Buying Checklist

A used engine purchase rewards preparation and punishes haste. This checklist runs through every step in the order that matters.

Buying a used engine is not complicated, but it involves enough steps that skipping any one of them creates risk. The most common source of expensive trouble is not buying from the wrong person; it is moving through the process out of order.

This checklist is designed to be worked through from start to finish, not skipped ahead to the part where you hand over money. Each step is cheap to do properly and expensive to skip.

Before you shop

These steps cost nothing and prevent the most common mistakes.

  1. Confirm the diagnosis. Pay for a professional diagnostic before you start shopping for an engine. On several platforms, particularly Nissan vehicles with a CVT, the symptoms of a transmission problem closely resemble engine trouble. A $150 diagnostic saves you from a $3,000 mistake.
  2. Decide whether the vehicle justifies the investment. Check the transmission, the suspension, the cooling system, the body, and the interior. If two or more of those are also near the end of their life, the engine is not really the decision you are making.
  3. Set a realistic total budget. The engine is one line item. Add freight, the components you will need to source separately, gaskets and seals, fluids, and the shop labour to install everything. A complete budget prevents half-finished projects.
  4. Line up an installer. Contact shops before you buy, not after the engine is sitting in your garage. Ask whether they have worked on your specific platform and whether they will advise on parts to replace during installation.

Identification

The engine code and your vehicle details determine everything that follows.

  1. Find your engine code. The stamp on the block is definitive. If you cannot locate it, the year, model and trim identify the engine on nearly every vehicle covered here. See the engine code guide for family-specific locations.
  2. Record your VIN. It identifies exactly what your vehicle was built as and removes ambiguity when communicating with suppliers.
  3. Note your transmission type. Automatic or manual, and whether the vehicle has a CVT. This determines the bellhousing pattern and the flywheel or flexplate.
  4. Confirm whether the vehicle is subject to emissions testing. In the Phoenix area, this is a real constraint on engine choice, particularly for swaps.

Sourcing

How you find and evaluate an engine determines what you get.

  1. Establish the exact variant, not just the family. A K24 is not a part. A K24A2 is. The suffix determines the cylinder head, the intake manifold, the compression ratio and often the engine management.
  2. Ask for photographs of the actual unit, including the engine code stamp. Stock images tell you nothing about the specific engine you are buying.
  3. Request compression figures if available, taken cylinder by cylinder with the date of the test.
  4. Confirm what is attached to the engine. Intake manifold, exhaust manifold, sensors, harness, accessories. Get this list in writing.
  5. Ask about the donor vehicle. Year, model, trim, and why the engine was removed. An engine removed from a running vehicle after a collision is a different proposition from one pulled from a non-running car.

Verification and purchase

Do not pay until fitment is confirmed. This is the single most important rule.

  1. Run the fitment check. Transmission, ECU, immobiliser, accessory layout, harness, and emissions equipment. All seven must be confirmed, not just the engine code.
  2. Get the warranty terms in writing. Duration, what is covered, what is excluded, whether labour is included, and what voids the cover.
  3. Confirm what happens if the engine does not work. Restocking fees, return freight, and the timeline for resolution.
  4. Confirm delivery logistics. Where the engine will arrive, what you need in place to receive a pallet, and whether you need to be present.
  5. Then pay. Not before fitment is verified, not before the warranty terms are documented, and not on the basis of a verbal promise.

After the engine arrives

The process does not end at delivery.

  1. Inspect the engine against what was described. Compare the engine code stamp, count the accessories, and check for damage that occurred during shipping.
  2. Do not install until your installer has inspected it. A competent installer will want to see the engine before committing to a timeline.
  3. Replace the oil and filter after the first 100 miles. This captures installation debris and assembly lube. Some installers include this in their labour.
  4. Keep the old engine until the new one is running properly. If something is wrong, having the original available makes diagnosis and warranty conversations much easier.
  5. Document everything. Installation date, oil change records, the original invoice, photographs during installation. These establish the maintenance baseline and are essential for any warranty claim.

Common questions

What is the first thing I should do when my engine fails?

Confirm the diagnosis with a professional. Paying for a diagnostic before shopping for an engine prevents the most expensive version of this mistake: buying an engine for a car whose problem is actually the transmission, the electrical system or something else entirely.

How long does the whole process take?

From diagnosis to a running car, three to six weeks is realistic for most people. The engine itself may take one to two weeks to source and deliver, the shop may need one to three days for installation, and the readiness monitors after installation need several days of driving. Rushing any part of this tends to create problems.

Should I buy the engine and arrange installation separately?

Most people do, and it works well as long as you line up the installer before the engine arrives. Some shops will source the engine for you, which adds a margin to the price but simplifies the process. The right choice depends on how comfortable you are managing the logistics yourself.
