WRX and STI are not the same order
The WRX uses the EJ255 and the STI the EJ257. They are both turbocharged 2.5-litre boxers and they are not interchangeable. On a car that may have been modified, the badge is weaker evidence than the stamp.
Separately, there is steady demand for JDM EJ20 engines, the EJ205 and the STI EJ207, which were never fitted to US-market cars. Those are swaps with engine-management work attached. If the goal is simply to get the car running again, the matching EJ25 variant is the direct route.
The FB20 in later models
Later non-turbo Imprezas moved to the FB20, a different engine from the EJ family with direct injection, a timing chain rather than a belt, and different internal architecture. The FB20 is not interchangeable with the EJ25, and sourcing the wrong family is a mistake that costs both the engine price and the installation labour.
The FB20 appeared on Imprezas from around the 2012 model year onward. If your car is a 2012 or 2013, confirm the stamped code rather than relying on the year, because the changeover boundary can fall across model years depending on trim and market.
What to have ready when you request an Impreza engine
Three facts settle most Impreza engine orders: whether the car is a base Impreza, a WRX or an STI, and the generation. The trim split is the one that determines which engine family you need, and it is the one most often left out of a request.
Without the trim, any quote has assumed one of three different engines. With it, a supplier can narrow to the correct variant immediately. The stamped code on the block is the final confirmation, but the trim gets you to the right conversation.

People do, but it is a swap rather than a replacement.
