Six engine families cover almost every Honda still on Valley roads, and picking the wrong one usually comes down to a trim badge.
Honda is the make this site sees most, for two reasons. There are a great many Hondas in Phoenix, and Honda has historically used several different engine families within the same model line at the same time. That combination produces more mis-ordered engines than any other manufacturer.
The families that matter for replacement work are the K-series (K20 and K24), the older B-series and D-series, the R-series that replaced the D-series in the Civic, and the J-series V6 under the larger vehicles. The J-series includes the J30, J32 and J35 variants. Between them they cover the Civic, Accord, CR-V, Element, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline.
The trim problem, and why Honda has it worse than most
On most manufacturers, the model year narrows an engine to one or two possibilities. On Honda it frequently does not, because performance trims were sold alongside base trims with a completely different engine family underneath.
A 2008 Civic is an R18A1 in LX or EX trim and a K20Z3 in Si trim. A 2013 Civic is an R18Z1 or a K24Z7 on the same basis. Those are not variants of one engine. They are different displacements, different valvetrains and different transmissions.
The practical rule: for a Honda, the trim is not optional information. A request that gives the year and model but not the trim leaves a supplier guessing on exactly the cars where guessing is most expensive.
Where Honda stamps the engine code
This is where most published guidance is wrong, and it is worth knowing before you go looking. Honda does not stamp every family in the same place.
The K-series code sits on a machined pad on the driver’s side of the block, near the starter. The older B-series and D-series are stamped on the front face of the block, between the engine and the radiator. A guide that gives one location for all Honda engines is describing the older families and will send you to the wrong side of a K-series.

Common questions
Which Honda engine does my car have?
It depends on the model, the generation and, critically, the trim. A Civic can be a D17, an R18, a K20 or a K24 depending on year and whether it is an Si. The vehicle pages break this down by generation, and the stamped code on the block settles it definitively.
Are Honda JDM engines interchangeable with US engines?
Sometimes, and never automatically. A JDM K24A is not the same specification as a US K24A2 even though both are K24s. Whether a Japanese-market engine will work in a US car depends on the cylinder head, intake manifold, ECU and immobiliser, which is what a fitment check establishes before anything is confirmed.
Is a JDM Honda engine better than a used US one?
Not inherently. The case usually made for JDM units is lower mileage, which is often true and rarely independently verifiable. A well-documented US-market engine with known history can be the better purchase. The right comparison is between two specific engines, not between two markets.
