How to Visually Inspect a Used Engine Before Buying
A visual inspection is not a mechanical assessment, but it catches things that a compression test and a mileage figure never will.
Most used engines are sold on the basis of a family code, a mileage figure, and perhaps a compression-test result. When you have the opportunity to see the engine in person, you have an advantage that most buyers do not use.
A visual inspection cannot tell you how long the engine will last. It can tell you whether the engine has been stored carefully, whether there are signs of damage or neglect, and whether the seller's description matches what is actually in front of you.
The exterior inspection
Start with the outside. What you see on the exterior often reflects how the engine was treated after removal.
- Check for cracked or broken mounting tabs. These indicate rough handling during removal or storage.
- Look at the exhaust ports. Heavy rust or white deposits can indicate a history of coolant leaks into the exhaust.
- Inspect the intake manifold and throttle body for carbon buildup. Heavy carbon suggests high mileage or poor maintenance.
- Check the valve cover for signs of oil seepage or RTV sealant. Fresh RTV may indicate recent work. Excessive seepage suggests neglected maintenance.
- Look at the wiring and sensors. Are they present, or has the harness been stripped? Missing sensors add to your total cost.
- Check the oil filler cap and the oil itself if accessible. Milky residue under the cap can indicate coolant contamination.
- Inspect the freeze plugs. Rust or weeping from freeze plugs can indicate internal corrosion from poor storage.
- Look at the overall cleanliness. An engine cleaned for sale is not the same as an engine maintained, but an engine caked in grime tells you something too.
Internal indicators visible from the outside
Some internal problems leave external traces. A brown, milky residue on the oil filler cap or the underside of the valve cover can indicate coolant mixing with oil, which points to a head gasket failure or a cracked block.
Heavy oil residue around the exhaust manifold ports suggests the exhaust manifold gaskets have been leaking, which is a maintenance item but not a catastrophe. Oil residue around the valve cover, on the other hand, suggests long-term neglect.
Check the coolant passages if visible. Green or orange residue around the thermostat housing or the coolant hose connections can indicate past overheating. White residue around the same areas may indicate past coolant leaks.
Compression and leak-down beyond the numbers
If you can be present for a compression test, watch how it is performed. The engine should be turned over with the throttle open and all spark plugs removed. The results should be recorded cylinder by cylinder, and the variation between cylinders matters as much as the absolute numbers.
A leak-down test, if available, is more informative than a compression test alone. It tells you where pressure is escaping: past the rings, through an intake valve, through an exhaust valve, or past the head gasket. That localisation is what makes it useful.
Neither test tells you about bearings, timing components, or the accessories. They are one input among several.
Documentation to request
The paperwork matters as much as the metal.
- Donor vehicle information: year, model, trim, and why the engine was removed.
- Compression test results if available, with the date they were taken.
- Photographs of the engine as removed, before it was cleaned or stored.
- The engine code stamp, confirming the exact variant.
- Storage information: how the engine has been stored and for how long.
Common questions
What should I bring to inspect a used engine?
A torch, a clean rag, and a phone camera. The torch reveals details in shadow: the engine code stamp, rust on freeze plugs, residue around ports. The rag lets you wipe surfaces to distinguish dirt from damage. The camera lets you document what you see for comparison or for a second opinion later.
What are the biggest red flags when looking at a used engine?
Milky residue under the oil cap (coolant contamination), cracked mounting tabs (rough handling), heavy carbon on the intake (high mileage or poor maintenance), missing sensors and harness (additional cost to source), and any visible signs of internal corrosion. None of these are automatically disqualifying, but all of them change the calculation.
Should I trust a visual inspection over a compression test?
Neither replaces the other. A compression test tells you about the sealing of the combustion chambers. A visual inspection tells you about the history, storage condition and maintenance of the engine. The best position is to have both, along with the donor vehicle information and the supplier's inspection process.
