How to Verify Engine Fitment
Matching the engine code is the first check, not the last one. Six other things decide whether the engine will run in your car.
A factory application table tells you which vehicles left the factory with a given engine. That is a fact about how cars were built, and it is genuinely useful, but it is not the same as a statement that a particular used engine will work in your particular car.
The gap between those two things is where fitment verification lives, and it covers rather more than most buyers expect.
The seven checks

Why the code alone is not enough
Take a concrete case. A K24A2 from an Acura TSX and a K24A1 from a Honda CR-V are both K24s. They share a block family. They have different cylinder heads, different intake manifolds and different compression ratios, and they were fitted to vehicles with different accessory layouts.
Neither is a substitute for the other in the other’s car, and no amount of reading "K24" in a listing will tell you which one you are looking at. The suffix does, and the suffix is what a fitment check establishes.
What to give a supplier
In rough order of usefulness. The first three answer most questions on their own.
- The VIN. It identifies exactly what your vehicle was built as and removes nearly all ambiguity.
- Year, make, model and trim. This identifies the engine on almost every vehicle covered here.
- Transmission type. Automatic or manual, and whether the car has a CVT.
- Drivetrain: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
- The stamped code from your current engine, if the car may have had an engine change.
- Whether the vehicle is subject to emissions testing where you live.
Fitment on a swap is a different question
Everything above assumes you are replacing an engine with the same engine. If you are fitting an engine the car never came with, fitment stops being a matching exercise and becomes an engineering one.
Mounts, driveshafts, the transmission, the cooling package, the fuel system and the entire engine management become project decisions rather than compatibility checks. That is a different undertaking with a different budget, and it is worth being clear which one you are doing before you start buying parts.
Common questions
Will a JDM engine fit my US vehicle?
It depends on the specific engine and the specific car. The engine code is the starting point; the transmission, ECU, immobiliser, accessory layout, harness and emissions equipment all have to be considered as well. That is what a fitment check covers, and it happens before anything is confirmed rather than after.
Do I need to change the ECU with a JDM engine?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the engine’s specification matches what your vehicle’s existing ECU expects. A Japanese-market variant of a family your car already uses may run fine; a different variant may not. It is one of the specific things verified before an engine is confirmed.
Is factory fitment the same as compatibility?
No, and the distinction matters. Factory fitment records which vehicles were built with which engine. Compatibility is whether a particular used engine will work in your particular car today, which additionally depends on the transmission, engine management and accessories. Application tables answer the first question, not the second.
