What Engine Removal and Installation Involves
The engine is the centrepiece of the job, but it is not the whole job. What happens around it determines whether the project goes well.
Replacing an engine is one of the larger mechanical jobs a vehicle can undergo, and one of the most commonly underestimated. The engine itself is heavy but straightforward to move. Everything connected to it is where the time and the complications live.
Understanding what the job actually involves helps you evaluate a shop quote, plan a realistic timeline, and make the decisions that should be made before the old engine comes out rather than after.
The removal process
Removal starts with draining fluids and disconnecting everything that connects the engine to the rest of the car: the wiring harness, fuel lines, coolant hoses, vacuum lines, the exhaust, the transmission, the mounts and the accessories. Every one of those connection points is a place where a bolt can snap, a line can be corroded, or a clip can be missing.
On a front-wheel-drive vehicle the engine and transmission usually come out together or separately through the top or the side. On a rear-wheel-drive vehicle the engine typically lifts straight up, which is simpler but requires more overhead clearance. The specific layout of the vehicle determines the approach.
A shop doing this regularly will have done hundreds of them and will know the shortcuts for each platform. A first-timer will not, and the difference in time is measured in days, not hours.
The installation steps
Installation is removal in reverse order, but the order matters more. The engine needs to be aligned with the transmission input shaft, seated on the mounts, and connected in a sequence that allows access to each connection point before the next one blocks it.
New gaskets and seals go on at this stage. Reusing old gaskets is a shortcut that usually costs more than the gaskets themselves, because a leak after installation means taking things apart again.
Fluids go in last, after every connection is made and double-checked. Starting an engine without oil, without coolant, or with a loose hose clamp is the kind of mistake that ruins an engine in minutes.

Choosing a shop
The shop you choose matters as much as the engine you buy.
- Ask how many engines they have installed on your specific platform. A shop that does Civic swaps regularly will approach an Altima differently, and vice versa.
- Ask whether the quote includes transferring components from your old engine. Some quotes assume you will do this yourself.
- Ask whether they will advise on parts to replace during installation, or whether that is your decision entirely.
- Ask for a written quote that itemises labour, parts, and any assumptions about what is included.
- Ask whether they will test-drive the vehicle before returning it, and what their break-in guidance is.
Common questions
How long does engine removal and installation take?
On a common platform with an experienced shop, two to four days is typical. More complex vehicles, or those requiring additional work like wiring harness adaptation, can take longer. A shop that gives you a specific timeline before seeing the vehicle is guessing, and you should treat that number accordingly.
What should be replaced during an engine installation?
At minimum: gaskets, seals, and motor mounts. Beyond that, the timing belt or chain components if applicable, the water pump if belt-driven, coolant hoses, the thermostat, and any sensors that are difficult to reach with the engine in place. The cost of these parts is small relative to the labour to access them.
How do I choose an engine installation shop?
Ask how many engines they have installed on your specific vehicle, whether the quote includes component transfer, whether they advise on supporting parts, and whether they provide a written itemised quote. A shop that does this daily will have answers to all of these. A shop that does not is telling you something.
