The 1JZ is the 2.5-litre member of Toyota’s JZ family, sharing the 2JZ’s 86 mm bore but running a much shorter 71.5 mm stroke. It powered a run of Japanese-market rear-drive sedans and coupes, the Chaser, Cresta, Mark II, Soarer and Crown, and was offered both naturally aspirated as the 1JZ-GE and turbocharged as the 1JZ-GTE.
Because those cars were never sold new in the United States, essentially every 1JZ here is an import. That shapes the buying process: you are dealing with imported units rather than domestic salvage, and documentation, mileage and condition claims are correspondingly harder to verify independently.
The 1JZ-GTE went through a significant revision in its life. Early units used twin turbochargers; later ones moved to a single turbocharger with VVT-i. Those are different engines to plan a build around, and the engine management is not shared.

They are different engines to plan a build around. The engine management is not shared, the turbocharger hardware is not shared, and parts sourced for one will not necessarily suit the other. A listing that says "1JZ-GTE" without saying which has left out the thing you most need to know.
Buying an engine with no domestic history
Because the donor cars were never sold here, every 1JZ in Arizona arrived as an import. There is no domestic salvage supply, no local service history and no way to independently verify most of what a seller tells you about the unit.
That shifts the diligence onto the supplier rather than the engine. What inspection do they do before an engine is listed? Will they photograph the stamp on the specific unit? What happens if it arrives not as described? Those questions matter more here than the family specification, because the specification is the part you can look up and the condition is not.

Identifying a 1JZ
- Stamped on the block. GE and GTE are separated physically by the turbocharger installation and the manifolds.
- Early twin-turbo and later single-turbo VVT-i 1JZ-GTE units differ visibly at the front of the engine and in the turbocharger arrangement.
- The shorter stroke is not externally visible; the code is the only reliable way to distinguish a 1JZ from a 2JZ short of measurement.
A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed. What varies between 1JZ units

Is a 1JZ just a smaller 2JZ?
Architecturally they are close relatives sharing an 86 mm bore, but the 1JZ uses a 71.5 mm stroke against the 2JZ’s 86 mm. The 1JZ revs more freely and makes less torque; the 2JZ has more displacement to work with. For a build where parts availability matters, the 2JZ has the deeper aftermarket in the US.
