The Subaru Legacy covers a wider engine range than most vehicles here. Naturally aspirated models used EJ25 variants through the fourth and fifth generations, and from 2015 moved to the FB25 and FA20. Turbocharged models used the EJ255, a different engine with different supporting hardware that commands different pricing.

The turbo Legacy models are more common replacement candidates in Phoenix than the naturally aspirated ones, because the higher stress on internal components leads to earlier failure. Where Subaru Legacy orders go wrong

  • Naturally aspirated and turbocharged Legacy models use different engines entirely. Confirm which you have.
  • EJ25, FB25 and FA20 are three different engine families with no parts in common. The generation decides which one your Legacy has.
  • Generation-specific parts, including intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds and engine mounts, differ across Legacy generations even within the same engine family.

Common questions

Is the Legacy turbo engine the same as the WRX?

Both use turbocharged boxer engines from the EJ family, but the Legacy uses the EJ255 while the WRX also uses the EJ255 in later models. They differ in calibration, intake, exhaust and supporting hardware. A WRX engine is not a direct replacement for a Legacy turbo without addressing those differences.

Can I replace an EJ25 with an FB25?

No. The EJ25 and FB25 are different engine families with different architecture, different intake systems and different engine management. They are not interchangeable. If your Legacy needs an engine, you need the correct family for your model year and trim.
