Toyota JDM Engines in Phoenix, Arizona
Two very different kinds of demand: people replacing a Camry engine, and people building something with a JZ.
Toyota generates the widest split of any manufacturer here. On one side is high-volume replacement work: the 2AZ-FE from the Camry, RAV4 and Highlander, which is among the most common engines on Phoenix roads. On the other is the enthusiast market for the JZ-series sixes and the UZ V8s.
These are almost entirely separate conversations. The first is a repair decision driven by the value of the car; the second is a project driven by what someone wants to build. What they share is that the family code alone does not identify the part.
The replacement side: 2AZ-FE and its two failure modes
If your Camry, RAV4, Highlander or Solara has a failed four-cylinder engine, it is a 2AZ-FE, and there are two things worth knowing before buying a used one.
Oil consumption affects a range of model years and is frequently why a donor engine came out of a car in the first place. Cylinder head bolt thread failure in the aluminium block affects earlier units and generally ends the engine. Neither means avoid the family (there are many good ones), both mean asking a supplier why the donor engine was removed.
The project side: JZ and UZ engines are swaps
A 2JZ, 1JZ or 1UZ going into anything is a swap, not a repair, and the engine is the smaller half of the budget. Engine management, transmission, driveshaft, cooling and fuel system all have to be planned together.
There is an Arizona-specific consideration as well: any engine change on a vehicle subject to emissions testing in Maricopa County raises OBD and emissions-equipment questions. Worth resolving before the engine is bought rather than at the test lane.

Which Toyota engine is in my Camry?
Four-cylinder Camrys from 2002 to 2011 use the 2AZ-FE. V6 cars of those years use the 1MZ-FE and later the 2GR-FE. Later four-cylinder cars moved to the 2AR-FE. The stamped code on the block confirms it, and the Camry page breaks it down by generation.
Are Toyota JDM engines reliable?
The families covered here have good reputations, but reliability is a property of the specific unit rather than the badge. A well-inspected engine with known provenance is a better purchase than a famous engine code with no history, and that is true of Toyota exactly as much as of anyone else.
