Honda Ridgeline Engine Replacement in Phoenix
A pickup truck that has always used the J35, but the generation decides whether you have port injection or direct injection, and those are different engines.
The Ridgeline is Honda's pickup truck and it has used the J35 V6 since its introduction in 2006. The first-generation Ridgeline (2006-2014) used the J35Z5, a 3.5-litre V6 with port injection. The second-generation (2017-2023) moved to the J35Y6 with direct injection and revised intake architecture.
Those are meaningfully different engines despite sharing a family designation. The direct-injection J35Y6 has a different fuel system, different intake manifold and different calibration. A first-generation unit will not run correctly in a second-generation truck without addressing those systems, and the reverse is equally true.
The Ridgeline's unibody construction and integrated bed make it a different vehicle from a mechanical standpoint than a conventional body-on-frame truck, but that does not change the engine conversation. What does change it is the generation and whether the vehicle is all-wheel drive, which affects the transfer case and supporting hardware.
Port injection versus direct injection
The first-generation Ridgeline (2006-2014) used the J35Z5 with port injection; the second-generation (2017-2023) used the J35Y6 with direct injection. They share a family designation but differ in fuel system, intake manifold and calibration. A first-generation unit will not run correctly in a second-generation truck without addressing those systems.
The Ridgeline's unibody construction does not change the engine conversation, but the all-wheel-drive option does. AWD Ridgelines have additional transfer case hardware that front-wheel-drive models do not have, and that should be part of the ordering conversation even though the engine block is the same.

- The J35Z5 and J35Y6 are different engines with different fuel systems; the generation decides which one you need.
- First-generation Ridgelines use port injection; second-generation models use direct injection. These are not interchangeable without addressing the fuel system.
