What belongs in an installation quote

Two quotes for the same job can differ substantially and represent quite different work. These are the items to make sure are addressed explicitly rather than assumed.

Removal and refitting labour, stated as hours rather than a lump sum where possible.
Fluids: the engine arrives dry. Oil, coolant and filters are not optional extras.
Timing belt, tensioner and water pump on any belt-driven engine. This is the largest single item people leave out.
Gaskets and seals, which are frequently excluded from the engine purchase itself.
Accessory transfer. Alternator, starter, pumps and often the harness come across from the old engine.
Cooling system components, which matter more here than almost anywhere else.
Diagnostic time after the engine is in, including clearing codes and confirming the vehicle runs correctly.

Do the cooling system while the engine is out

This is the Phoenix-specific part of the advice, and it is not padding. Sustained summer heat leaves a cooling system operating with far less margin than it would in a milder climate, and overheating is both a common early failure mode for a replacement engine and a common exclusion in used-engine warranties.

The components that matter are cheap relative to an engine and dramatically easier to reach while the engine is out. Deferring them means paying for that access twice, or worse. What to replace, and why the heat changes the calculation.

How to judge a shop

Have they done this engine, or this vehicle, before? Ask specifically.
Will they quote in writing with the inclusion list itemised?
Do they warranty their labour separately from the engine warranty?
Will they work with an engine you supply, and does that change their labour warranty?
If your vehicle is subject to Arizona emissions testing, have they taken a comparable job through a test?
What is their estimate for how long the car will be off the road?

How much does engine installation cost?

It varies enough by vehicle, engine and shop that a published figure would mislead more than it helped: a transverse V6 in a minivan and an inline four in a Civic are different jobs. What is more useful is knowing what belongs in the quote so you can compare two of them properly, which is what this page covers.

Can you help me find an installer?

What should be replaced during installation?

On a belt-driven engine: the timing belt, tensioner and water pump. Beyond that, the thermostat, hoses, radiator cap and, depending on condition, the radiator and cooling fans. The labour to reach these overlaps almost entirely with fitting the engine, so doing them together costs a fraction of doing them later.

Can I install a used engine myself?

Mechanically it is achievable with the right equipment and experience. The commercial catch is that many used-engine warranties require professional installation and are void without it. Before deciding, read the warranty terms. The cover you would be giving up may be worth more than the labour you would save.
