Honda Accord JDM Engine Guide
The Accord split into four-cylinder and V6 models early in its life, and those two paths use entirely different engines with different replacement considerations.
The Honda Accord is one of the most common vehicles requiring an engine replacement in the Phoenix market. Its production run spans decades, and the engine families used in it have changed multiple times.
The most important thing to understand about the Accord is that the four-cylinder and V6 models have nothing in common mechanically beyond the badge. They use different engine families, different transmissions, different accessory layouts and different maintenance schedules. Treating them as variants of the same car is the source of most ordering mistakes.

The four-cylinder path: K24
The K24 is the engine most commonly replaced in the Accord, and it spans multiple variants across the generations. The most common are the K24A in the seventh generation, the K24Z in the eighth, and the K24W in the ninth.
These are not the same engine. The cylinder head, the intake manifold, the compression ratio and the engine management all changed across generations. A K24A from a 2005 Accord is not a direct replacement for a K24Z from a 2010, even though both are K24s.
The suffix matters. Always confirm the exact variant rather than relying on the family code.
The V6 path: J30 and J35
The V6 Accord uses Honda's J-series V6, which appeared in the Accord in the sixth generation as the J30A and progressed through the J35Z and J35Y in later generations.
The J-series is timing-belt driven, which is a significant maintenance item. If the belt has not been replaced on schedule, the engine is at risk of interference damage if the belt fails. On a replacement engine, confirming the timing belt history or replacing it during installation is essential.
Later J35 variants include cylinder deactivation technology, which adds complexity to the engine management. Confirm whether your vehicle has this feature, because the replacement engine must match.
What to verify before ordering
- Four-cylinder or V6. This determines the entire engine path.
- The exact engine code suffix. K24A vs K24Z vs K24W, or J30A vs J35Z vs J35Y.
- Transmission type. The four-cylinder and V6 use different transmissions, and within those, manual and automatic differ.
- On the V6, whether the vehicle has cylinder deactivation. The replacement must match.
- On the tenth-generation four-cylinder, confirm whether you need the 1.5T turbo engine. This is a fundamentally different engine from the naturally aspirated K24.
- Emissions equipment. JDM engines may lack US-specific hardware required for Arizona testing.
Common questions
Which Accord engine is most commonly replaced?
The K24 four-cylinder, because it is the most widely sold Accord engine and the 2AZ-FE-era oil consumption issues do not apply here but general wear does. The J35 V6 is also common, with the timing belt being the primary maintenance-driven replacement reason.
Can I swap a K24 into a V6 Accord?

Are all K24 Accords the same engine?
