The MZR 2.0 is a 1,999 cc inline-four that Mazda produced from 2001 to 2012 as its mainstream four-cylinder engine. It powered the Mazda3, the Mazda6, the Mazda Tribute and the MPV, and it was the engine that carried Mazda through the decade before the SKYACTIV generation replaced it.

The MZR family also included a 2.3-litre variant, the MZR 2.3, which appeared in the Mazda3 Mazdaspeed, the CX-7 and certain Mazda6 applications. The two share an architecture but differ in bore and stroke, and the 2.3 was offered in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged form.

In the Phoenix market the MZR 2.0 comes up as a replacement for aging Mazda3 and Mazda6 cars where the vehicle still has useful life. The used supply is adequate for the common cases and the decision usually follows the same repair-or-replace arithmetic as other high-volume four-cylinders.

MZR is not SKYACTIV

The MZR 2.3 is a larger-displacement relative that appeared in higher-output and turbocharged applications. The two share an architecture but differ in bore and stroke, and the 2.3 is not a direct substitute for the 2.0.

MZR 2.0 variants

Identifying a MZR 2.0

  • The MZR stamp is on the block. The MZR family preceded the SKYACTIV generation and is a different engine in block design, head design and combustion technology.
  • The MZR and SKYACTIV 2.0 are not the same engine despite the similar displacement. SKYACTIV uses a fundamentally different block with higher compression and different fuel injection.
  • MZR 2.0 and MZR 2.3 share an architecture but differ in bore and stroke. The 2.3 also appeared in turbocharged form.

A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim.
