On a Nissan, the most important question is often whether the engine is the thing that failed.
Two engines account for most Nissan replacement demand in the Valley: the VQ35DE V6 and the QR25DE four. Between them they cover the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Quest, Pathfinder, Sentra SE-R and Rogue, plus a range of Infiniti models.
Nissan is also the manufacturer where the diagnosis matters most, because of the transmission.
The CVT question comes before the engine question
A great many of these vehicles use Nissan’s continuously variable transmission, and CVT failure is common enough that it should be positively ruled out before an engine is ordered.
The reason this matters so much is that the symptoms overlap almost completely with engine trouble. Hesitation, slipping and loss of power are what an owner would describe as an engine problem and are also exactly what a failing CVT does.
A replacement engine fitted behind a failing CVT does not fix the car and the money is not recoverable. Paying a shop to establish which component failed is the cheapest step in the job.
VQ35DE and VQ35HR are different engines
This is the most expensive mistake made on Nissan V6 cars. Despite sharing a displacement and the VQ35 name, the HR has a different deck height, different cylinder heads and a different accessory layout.
It will not stand in for a DE. Confirm which engine a listing actually describes before any money moves. The names invite the confusion and the cost of acting on it is an engine that cannot be installed.

Common questions
Which Nissan engine do I need?
For most vehicles it is the QR25DE if the car is a four-cylinder and the VQ35DE if it is a V6. Which application of that engine you need depends on the model and drivetrain, since sump, accessory layout and mounting differ between front-drive and rear-drive cars. The VIN settles it.
Is my problem the engine or the CVT?
Worth establishing before buying anything. CVT failure is common on these vehicles and presents in ways that read as engine trouble. Ask your installer to confirm which component has actually failed. It is the single most valuable diagnostic step on a Nissan.
