Toyota RAV4 Engine Replacement in Phoenix

The Camry’s engine in a taller body, plus one extra question the Camry never has to answer.

The RAV4 used the 2AZ-FE from 2001 to 2008, which puts it in the same engine conversation as the Camry with one important addition: drivetrain. RAV4s were sold in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive form, and that affects the supporting hardware around the engine.

From 2006 a 3.5-litre V6 was also offered, and later four-cylinder cars moved to the 2AR-FE. So "RAV4" spans three different engine conversations depending on year and specification.

The same 2AZ-FE cautions apply here as on the Camry, oil consumption and head bolt threads, and for the same reasons.

Drivetrain is the RAV4-specific variable

RAV4s were sold in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive form, and that affects the supporting hardware around the engine rather than the engine itself. It is the piece of information most often left out of a request, and it is the one that turns a correct engine into an incorrect order.

The other RAV4-specific trap is the changeover to the 2AR-FE on later four-cylinder cars. If your vehicle sits near that boundary, check the stamped code rather than relying on the model year.

Where Toyota RAV4 orders go wrong

  • Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive applications differ in supporting hardware.
  • Later four-cylinder RAV4s use the 2AR-FE, not the 2AZ-FE. The year decides.
  • A V6 RAV4 is an entirely different engine conversation.
  • The 2AZ-FE failure modes apply here as on the Camry; ask why the donor engine came out.

None of this needs to be worked out on your own. The Engine Finder asks for the year, model and trim and does the identification from there. The engine code field is optional precisely because most people do not have it.

Year, trim and ZIP is enough to start. If you have the VIN it removes the guesswork entirely.

Which vehicle is the engine for?

Year, make and model get us most of the way. Trim matters more than people expect. A 2008 Civic is a different engine depending on whether it is an Si.

LX, EX, Si, Type-S, V6. Whatever is on the badge.

Know your engine code? Add it here.

If you do not, leave these blank. That is genuinely fine. Working out which engine a vehicle takes is the part we do. Here is where the code is stamped if you want to look.

We do not confirm that an engine fits your vehicle until it has been checked against it.

Common questions

Does my RAV4 have a 2AZ-FE or a 2AR-FE?

Four-cylinder RAV4s through 2008 use the 2AZ-FE; later cars moved to the 2AR-FE. They are different engines and are not interchangeable. Check the stamped code on the block rather than going by the year alone if your car sits near the changeover.
