The Camry’s engine in a taller body, plus one extra question the Camry never has to answer.
The RAV4 used the 2AZ-FE from 2001 to 2008, which puts it in the same engine conversation as the Camry with one important addition: drivetrain. RAV4s were sold in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive form, and that affects the supporting hardware around the engine.
From 2006 a 3.5-litre V6 was also offered, and later four-cylinder cars moved to the 2AR-FE. So "RAV4" spans three different engine conversations depending on year and specification.
The same 2AZ-FE cautions apply here as on the Camry, oil consumption and head bolt threads, and for the same reasons.
Drivetrain is the RAV4-specific variable
RAV4s were sold in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive form, and that affects the supporting hardware around the engine rather than the engine itself. It is the piece of information most often left out of a request, and it is the one that turns a correct engine into an incorrect order.
The other RAV4-specific trap is the changeover to the 2AR-FE on later four-cylinder cars. If your vehicle sits near that boundary, check the stamped code rather than relying on the model year.
What to have ready when you request a RAV4 engine
Four facts settle a RAV4 engine order: the generation, whether the car is a four-cylinder or a V6, the drivetrain configuration (front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive), and the engine code if you are near the 2AR-FE changeover boundary.
The 2AZ-FE was used through most of the second generation, but later model years moved to the 2AR-FE. These are different engines with different part numbers. A 2012 and a 2013 RAV4 may look identical, but the stamped code on the block is the only thing that confirms which engine sits inside.
Cooling in Phoenix
A RAV4 that accumulates Valley miles spends a lot of time at high ambient temperature, often with the air conditioning running and, if it is all-wheel drive, additional drivetrain load. The cooling system is what keeps the engine alive under those conditions, and a replacement engine installed without addressing the cooling system is a short-term fix.
A supplier or installer should be asked about the condition of the thermostat, water pump and radiator before the engine ships. On a vehicle with real mileage, replacing the thermostat and water pump as part of the engine job is inexpensive insurance compared to a second teardown.

- Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive applications differ in supporting hardware.
- Later four-cylinder RAV4s use the 2AR-FE, not the 2AZ-FE. The year decides.
- A V6 RAV4 is an entirely different engine conversation.
- The 2AZ-FE failure modes apply here as on the Camry; ask why the donor engine came out.
