Engine Cooling and the Phoenix Heat
A cooling system that was adequate in a mild climate is not automatically adequate here, and a new engine is exactly the wrong thing to find that out with.
Most used-engine advice is written for a general audience and stops at the engine. In Phoenix there is a local variable that deserves its own treatment, because it is the one most likely to turn a good engine purchase into a second failure.
Sustained summer heat here means the cooling system spends months operating with far less margin than it would elsewhere. Anything marginal becomes a failure, and an engine that has just been installed has no history to reassure you.
Why heat is an engine-buying question, not just a maintenance one
Overheating is one of the most common ways a used engine fails early, and it is frequently excluded from warranty cover, which means a cooling failure after installation can cost you both the engine and the protection you thought you had.
It is also usually preventable. The components that fail are known, they are inexpensive relative to an engine, and most of them are far easier to reach while the engine is out.
So the cooling system belongs in the engine conversation rather than being deferred to the first hot week.

The economics of doing it at the same time
The argument for replacing these components during installation is not that they are certainly failing. It is that the labour to reach them overlaps almost entirely with the labour you are already paying for.
A water pump on a belt-driven engine is a large job on its own and a small addition during an engine swap. The same is true of the radiator, the hoses and the fans. Deferring them means paying for that access a second time, or, worse, having one of them fail and take the new engine with it.
After the engine is in
The first summer is the one that finds problems. A few habits make a real difference.
- Watch the temperature gauge deliberately for the first few weeks, particularly in slow traffic where airflow is lowest.
- Do not ignore air conditioning performance changes. The condenser sits in front of the radiator and the two interact.
- Have the coolant checked rather than just topped up. Concentration matters as much as level.
- If the temperature climbs in traffic but is fine at speed, suspect the fans rather than the radiator.
- Stop at the first sign of overheating. Continuing is what turns a cooling problem into an engine problem, and it is the fastest route to voiding a warranty.

The labour to reach these overlaps with fitting the engine, so doing them together costs a fraction of doing them later.
Should I upgrade the radiator when replacing an engine?
Worth discussing with your installer rather than treating as automatic. If the existing radiator is old, or the vehicle has a history of running warm in summer, replacing it during the installation is cheap insurance. A vehicle that has always cooled well with a sound radiator may not need it.
