The Civic has been sold continuously for decades in trims that share a body and not an engine, and nothing about the car tells you which one you have without looking.
The split that causes the most trouble is Si versus everything else. In the eighth generation, a 2008 Civic is an R18A1 if it is an LX or an EX and a K20Z3 if it is an Si. Those are different engine families: different displacement, different valvetrain, different transmission. An order placed on "2008 Honda Civic" alone cannot be filled correctly, and if it is filled anyway, it is filled by guessing.
The seventh generation has a quieter version of the same problem. The D17A1 and D17A2 differ by VTEC, which follows the trim rather than the year, and the two are not interchangeable without addressing the engine management.
What to establish before you ask anyone for a price
Two facts settle almost every Civic engine order: the generation and whether the car is an Si. Get those and a supplier can narrow to a specific variant. Without them, any quote you receive has assumed one of them.
If the car has been modified (and Civics are modified more than most) the badge and the paperwork can both be wrong. The stamped code on the block is the only thing that settles it, and it takes a torch and two minutes.

- In the seventh generation, VTEC and non-VTEC D17 variants follow the trim, not the model year.
- Civics are modified more than most cars, so the engine currently in the car is not always the one it was built with. The stamped code settles it.
- Transmission type affects more than the transmission on several of these applications.

Why does the trim matter so much on a Civic?
Because Si and non-Si Civics of the same model year use different engine families, not different tunes of the same engine. Ordering on year alone gives a supplier a fifty-fifty choice on some model years, and an engine that arrives from the wrong side of that split cannot be made to fit by adapting parts.
