Acura Integra Engine Replacement in Phoenix
The Integra looks like a simple Honda B-series job until you notice that the trim decides which B18 you have, and the DC5 is not a B-series at all.
The Integra is one of the most common Honda B-series vehicles in the Valley, and it is also one of the most frequently mis-ordered. The B18 family powered every Integra from 1990 to 1999, but which B18 depends on the trim, and the differences between the non-VTEC and VTEC variants are not small. A 1994 Integra LS and a 1994 Integra GS-R are both B18 cars, and they are not the same engine.
The third generation (1990 to 1993) offered the B18A in base, LS and GS trims and the B18C in GS-R and Type R trims. The fourth generation (1994 to 1999) moved to the B18B in LS, RS and SE trims, the B18C1 in the GS-R and the B18C5 in the Type R. The fifth generation (2000 to 2001, DC5 chassis) dropped the B-series entirely and moved to the K20A2, a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine that is a different family from the B-series and is not interchangeable with it.
Two things shape every Integra engine conversation. The first is that the B-series was shared with the Civic, which means donor engines can come from either vehicle, but the accessory layout, wiring and engine management are application-specific. A B18 from a Civic is not automatically an Integra part. The second is that the Type R and GS-R VTEC variants are more commonly sought than the non-VTEC units, which affects both availability and price, and makes verification of the stamped code more important than usual.
Why "B18" is not enough to place an order
Every Integra from 1990 to 1999 used a B-series engine, but the B18 family contains several variants that are not interchangeable. The non-VTEC B18A and B18B share a block family with the VTEC B18C, B18C1 and B18C5, but the cylinder head, valvetrain, intake manifold and engine management are different between them. A non-VTEC engine in a car that was built with VTEC will not run correctly without addressing those systems, and the reverse is equally true.
The VTEC split is the one that causes the most confusion. The B18A and B18B are 1.8-litre DOHC engines without variable valve timing. The B18C, B18C1 and B18C5 add Honda's VTEC system, which changes the cylinder head, the cam profile and the engine management. These are meaningfully different engines that happen to share a displacement and a block family. Treat them as different parts.
The DC5 chassis, 2000 to 2001, dropped the B-series entirely and moved to the K20A2, a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine. The K20A2 is not related to the B-series and shares no parts with it. If your Integra is a DC5, the B-series sections of this page do not apply.
The Civic connection and why it complicates sourcing
The B18 family was fitted to both the Integra and the Civic, which means donor engines can come from either vehicle. That is useful for availability, but it means the family code alone is not the end of the identification. A B18 from a Civic has different accessory layout, wiring and engine management calibration than the same family engine from an Integra. Fitting one without addressing those differences produces drivability problems and check-engine lights.
This matters because the B-series is one of the most commonly swapped Honda engines, and listings frequently do not distinguish between Integra and Civic applications. A B18C1 from a Civic GS-R is not an Integra GS-R engine without verifying the application details. The stamped code on the block tells you the family; the VIN tells you the application.
Type R engines, B18C5 and K20A2, are the most commonly sought units in this family and the most commonly mis-described. The B18C5 has a higher compression ratio, different internals and different engine management than the standard B18C1. Fitting a B18C1 where a B18C5 was specified will run, but it will not produce the same output, and the engine management may require attention. Verify the stamped code on any unit described as a Type R engine.
Phoenix-specific considerations for the Integra
The B-series is a timing-belt engine. Any used B18 without documented belt service should be quoted with the belt, tensioner and water pump included in the installation. The B-series timing belt is a standard maintenance item at defined intervals, and skipping it to save on upfront cost is the most common way a replacement engine arrives with a second failure already waiting. The belt is inexpensive. The labour to access it is not.
Cooling system condition matters on older Integras in the Valley. A 1990 to 1993 Integra that has spent its life in Phoenix has been through enough heat cycles that the radiator, hoses and thermostat are often near end of life by the time the engine fails. Installing a replacement engine behind a cooling system that cannot hold temperature shortens its life immediately.
The K20A2 in the DC5 is a timing-chain engine, which removes the belt service question. But the DC5 is also a higher-revving engine than the B-series, and the timing chain, tensioner and guides wear accordingly. A DC5 replacement engine without documentation of recent chain service should be evaluated with that in mind.

Where Acura Integra orders go wrong
- Non-VTEC and VTEC B-series engines are different specifications. The B18A, B18B, B18C1 and B18C5 are not interchangeable without addressing the head, intake, valvetrain and engine management.
- B-series engines are shared with the Civic, but the Integra application has its own accessory layout and wiring. A B18 from a Civic is not automatically an Integra part.
- The DC5 chassis (2000 to 2001) uses the K20A2, not a B-series. Confirm the generation before ordering, because the two families share no parts.
- Type R engines, B18C5 and K20A2, are more commonly sought and more commonly mis-described. Verify the stamped code before committing.
