J35 Engine in Phoenix, Arizona

The engine under most large Hondas of the last two decades, and the one that turns up most often on high-mileage minivans that still have life in them.

The J35 is Honda’s 3.5-litre V6 and the engine under most large Hondas of the last two decades: Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, the V6 Accord, and a range of Acura models. In Phoenix it comes up most often on high-mileage minivans, where the vehicle still has useful life left and the engine has reached the end of its.

Two things dominate the buying conversation. The first is Variable Cylinder Management: the cylinder-deactivation system fitted to many later J-series engines, which has a mixed reputation and which some owners specifically want to avoid. Whether a given replacement has VCM depends on the variant, and it is a question worth asking before ordering rather than after.

The second is that the J35 spans a long production run with real differences between generations in intake, head and accessory layout. A J35 from a 2005 Odyssey and a J35 from a 2014 Pilot are not the same part.

Variable Cylinder Management, and whether you want it

Many later J-series engines carry cylinder deactivation, Honda calls it Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts down cylinders under light load to save fuel. It has a mixed reputation among owners, and a number of people specifically want a replacement without it.

Whether a given engine has it depends on the variant and the model year, and it affects both the wiring and how the engine behaves in service. It is a question that is easy to answer before an engine ships and awkward to answer afterwards, so raise it when you request availability rather than assuming.

The timing belt is part of the installation cost

The J35 is belt-driven rather than chain-driven, which makes the belt a scheduled replacement item rather than something that lasts the life of the engine. A failure on this engine is expensive.

On a used unit with no documented belt service, the belt, tensioner and water pump belong in the installation quote rather than on a list of things to get to later. The labour overlaps almost entirely with fitting the engine, so doing it at the same time costs a fraction of doing it separately, and not doing it at all is the most expensive option of the three.

Identifying a J35

  • The J-series code is stamped on the block; the suffix identifies the generation and specification.
  • VCM-equipped variants can be identified by the rocker assemblies and the associated solenoids and wiring on the affected bank.
  • Timing belt driven rather than chain driven, which makes service history a meaningful part of the buying decision.

A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed. The engine code guide shows where each family is stamped if you want to read the one in your own car first.

What varies between J35 units

These are the differences that decide whether two engines with the same family code are substitutes in a particular car.

  • VCM presence differs by variant and model year, and affects both the wiring and the way the engine behaves in service.
  • Intake manifold and accessory layout vary across generations; a physically similar engine may still need components transferred.
  • The timing belt is a scheduled service item on this family. On any used unit without documented recent replacement, budget for it as part of the install.
  • Transverse applications differ in mounting and accessory drive between minivan, SUV and sedan platforms.

Nothing on this page confirms that a specific J35 will work in your vehicle. That takes the year, model and trim at one end and a specific unit at the other, and it happens before a price is given rather than after. What goes into that check is set out here.

The code is pre-filled. Add the year, model and trim, and the variant question gets settled on our side before anything is confirmed.

Which vehicle is the engine for?

Year, make and model get us most of the way. Trim matters more than people expect. A 2008 Civic is a different engine depending on whether it is an Si.

LX, EX, Si, Type-S, V6. Whatever is on the badge.

Know your engine code? Add it here.

If you do not, leave these blank. That is genuinely fine. Working out which engine a vehicle takes is the part we do. Here is where the code is stamped if you want to look.

We do not confirm that an engine fits your vehicle until it has been checked against it.

Common questions

Does my replacement J35 have VCM, and can I avoid it?

It depends on the variant and model year. VCM was fitted to many but not all later J-series engines. If you specifically want a non-VCM unit, say so when you request availability, because it narrows which variants will fit your vehicle and is much easier to establish before an engine ships than after.

Why does the timing belt matter so much on a J35?

Because it is a belt rather than a chain, it is a scheduled replacement item, and a failure on this engine is expensive. On a used unit with no documented belt service, treat the belt, tensioner and water pump as part of the installation cost rather than a maintenance item you will get to later.
