The 2JZ is a cast-iron-block 3.0-litre inline-six built by Toyota from 1991 to 2005, and it is the single most name-recognised JDM engine there is. It came in two forms that matter: the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, fitted to the Lexus GS300, IS300, SC300 and the non-turbo Supra, and the twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE from the Supra Turbo and the Toyota Aristo.
Both share the same 86 × 86 mm square bore and stroke and the same fundamental architecture. What differs is compression, pistons, the cylinder head, the fuel system and, obviously, the turbochargers. The GE runs a higher compression ratio suited to natural aspiration; the GTE runs lower compression to live with boost.
The 2JZ is also where a Phoenix buyer needs to be most careful. Demand is high, supply of genuine GTE units is finite, and the price gap between a GE and a GTE is large enough to motivate misdescription. The engine that arrives should be verified against the stamp and the physical hardware, not the listing.
Worth being clear about the intent, too: almost nobody buys a 2JZ as a like-for-like repair. This is swap territory, which means the ECU, the harness, the transmission, the fuel system, the cooling package and, on any vehicle subject to Arizona emissions testing, the emissions equipment are all part of the project.
GE, GTE, and the engine that is neither
The 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE share a square 86 × 86 mm bore and stroke and the same fundamental architecture. What differs is compression, pistons, cylinder head, fuel system and the two turbochargers. The GE runs high compression suited to natural aspiration; the GTE runs lower compression to live with boost.
The engine that causes trouble is the third one: a GE with turbochargers bolted to it. It is not a GTE, it does not have GTE internals, and it will not tolerate GTE boost levels. Listings that describe such an engine as a "turbo 2JZ" are not necessarily lying, but they are not describing a 2JZ-GTE either.
Ask for photographs of the actual unit showing the stamp, the turbochargers in place and the fuel system: not a stock image. The price gap is wide enough to motivate misdescription, and none of it is visible in a photograph of a crate.
What a 2JZ actually commits you to
Almost nobody buys a 2JZ as a like-for-like repair. This is swap territory, and the engine is the smaller half of the project. The ECU, harness, transmission, driveshaft, fuel system and cooling package all have to be planned as one thing.
The physical constraints are real too. This is a long, heavy iron-block six, and bay clearance, steering clearance and the cooling package are the three things that most often force a redesign midway through a build.
And in Maricopa County there is the emissions question. A 1996-or-newer vehicle gets an OBD-based test that a swap has to satisfy, and ADEQ does not publish a simple public rule covering engine changes. That is worth resolving with ADEQ before the engine is bought, not after the car is apart.

2JZ variants
Three specifications that get referred to interchangeably and should not be. The gap between them is measured in thousands of dollars.
- 2JZ-GEBoth
- Naturally aspirated, higher compression. GS300, IS300, SC300, non-turbo Supra.
- 2JZ-GTEBoth
- Twin-turbocharged, lower compression, different pistons and head. Supra Turbo and Aristo.
- 2JZ-GTE VVT-iJDM
- Later variable-valve-timing version. Different front cover and engine management.
Identifying a 2JZ
- The engine code is cast and stamped on the block; GE and GTE are physically distinguishable by the presence of turbochargers, the manifolds and the fuel system.
- A GTE carries its twin turbochargers and the associated plumbing; a GE that has had turbos added is not a GTE and does not have GTE internals.
- VVT-i was introduced on later versions of both variants, which changes the front of the engine and the wiring: a meaningful distinction when matching an ECU.
A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed. What varies between 2JZ units
These are the differences that decide whether two engines with the same family code are substitutes in a particular car.
- This is a swap engine in almost every case. Budget for mounts, transmission, driveshaft, cooling, fuel system, wiring and engine management, not just the engine.
- VVT-i and non-VVT-i versions need different engine management and are not interchangeable without addressing the ECU.
- The 2JZ is a physically large, heavy iron-block six. Bay clearance, steering and cooling package are real constraints in most swap targets.
