The K20 shares its architecture with the K24 but uses a square 86 × 86 mm bore and stroke rather than the K24’s long stroke. The practical result is an engine that revs harder and makes its power higher, which is why the K20 dominates the swap market while the K24 dominates the replacement market.

Phoenix sees demand from both directions. Someone with a 2002–2006 RSX or an 8th-generation Civic Si needs a K20 because that is what the car came with. Someone with an older Civic hatchback wants a K20 because it is the most developed four-cylinder swap in the Honda world. Those are different buyers with different questions, and the second group needs to think much harder about the ECU, the harness and the emissions equipment than the first.

The variant spread is wide and genuinely consequential. A K20A from a JDM Integra Type R and a K20A3 from a base RSX are both "K20" and are not remotely the same engine in cylinder head, compression or VTEC behaviour.

The A3 is not a slightly slower A2

The most common misunderstanding about this family is that the variants are the same engine at different states of tune. They are not. The K20A3 uses a different VTEC implementation from the K20A and K20A2: it operates on the intake side in a way that changes the character of the engine rather than simply moving the crossover point, and it runs lower compression.

For a replacement that means an A3 and an A2 are not substitutes. For a swap it means the price difference between them reflects a real difference in hardware, and a listing that says only "K20" has not told you which side of that line it sits on.

What a K20 swap costs beyond the engine

A K20 going into anything other than its factory application is a swap, and swaps have a parts list that the engine price does not include: mounts, axles, a shift linkage, an ECU, a wiring harness, and usually a fuel system and cooling work.

There is an Arizona-specific item on that list as well. If the vehicle is subject to emissions testing in Maricopa County, the engine change raises questions about the OBD system and the emissions equipment that came with the donor engine. Those are worth resolving before the engine is bought rather than at the test lane.

None of that makes the swap a bad idea. It makes the budget larger than the engine price, which is the number most people plan around.

K20 variants

Four codes covering a wide spread of specifications. The gap between a K20A3 and a Type R K20A is far larger than the shared family name suggests.

Identifying a K20

  • Stamped on the driver’s side of the block near the starter, in the same location as the K24. The two families are stamped identically.
  • The suffix carries the specification: A, A2 and A3 are meaningfully different engines, and the plain JDM "K20A" stamp spans several of them.
  • The cylinder head casting and the intake manifold are the fastest visual discriminators between a Type R specification head and a base-model head.

A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed. What varies between K20 units

These are the differences that decide whether two engines with the same family code are substitutes in a particular car.

  • Compression ratio varies substantially across the family, which affects fuel requirements: a real consideration in Phoenix summer heat with pump fuel.
  • The K20A3 uses a different VTEC implementation from the K20A and K20A2 and behaves differently enough that it is not a like-for-like substitution.
  • A K20 going into anything other than its factory application is a swap, not a replacement, and swaps carry ECU, harness, axle and emissions-equipment work that a straight replacement does not.

Common questions

What is the difference between a K20 and a K24?

Bore and stroke, and what follows from them. The K20 is square at 86 × 86 mm and revs higher; the K24 uses a 99 mm stroke and makes more torque lower down. For a straight replacement, use whichever your car came with. For a swap, the K24 is generally the easier engine to live with in traffic and the K20 is the one built for revs.

Can I put a K20 in a car that came with a D-series?

It is one of the most documented swaps in the Honda world, but it is a swap and not a replacement. You are changing engine mounts, axles, the shift linkage, the ECU and the wiring harness, and on a vehicle subject to Arizona emissions testing you also need to think about the OBD system and the emissions equipment that came with the donor engine. Budget for the supporting parts, not just the engine.
