The H22A is the VTEC member of Honda's H-series family, produced exclusively for the Prelude from 1992 to 2001. It is a DOHC four-cylinder with Honda's VTEC variable valve timing system, and it was the engine that gave the Prelude its performance character. Unlike the K-series and B-series engines that appear elsewhere in this catalogue, the H-series was never fitted to the Civic, the CR-V or any high-volume Acura model in the US market.

That exclusivity is the defining feature of the H22A from a sourcing perspective. The supply pool is limited to Prelude engines and a small number of international-market applications, which means fewer donor units exist and lead times can be longer than for more common Honda engines. The H22A and the H23A share a block family but differ in internals, compression and valvetrain, so the family code alone does not identify a part.

The H-series was produced in lower volume than the D-series and K-series, which affects both availability and price. An H22A is not a commodity part in the way a K24 is, and the variant code matters more because there are fewer chances to get it right.

Why the H-series is harder to source than a K-series

The H-series was produced in lower volume than the D-series and K-series, and it was used in fewer vehicle platforms. Fewer Preludes were sold than Civics or Accords, and fewer ended up in salvage inventory as a result. That narrows the pool of available donor engines and can affect both lead time and price.

The supply picture is further narrowed by the variant split. The H22A and H23A share a block family but differ in internals, compression and valvetrain, so the family code alone does not identify a part. A supplier who sends the wrong variant will deliver an engine that fits the mounts but does not match the power the car was built with.

H22A versus H23A: the trim decides

A Honda Prelude is either an H22A or an H23A, and that decision was made at the factory based on the trim level. Fourth-generation Preludes split between the H23A1 (non-VTEC base and DX) and the H22A1 (Si and VTEC). Fifth-generation Preludes split between the H23A (base) and the H22A4 (Type SH).

The two engines share a block family but differ in cylinder head, valvetrain and compression. They are not direct substitutes for each other, and fitting a non-VTEC H23A where a VTEC H22A was specified, or the reverse, changes the engine's behaviour in ways that may require engine management attention.

The stamped code on the block is the definitive identifier. On a car that may have had engine work done, the badge and the paperwork can both be wrong. The stamp takes two minutes to read.

What to check before ordering an H22A

Generation and trim first. Those two facts narrow the engine to a specific code: H23A1, H22A1, H23A or H22A4. Without both, a supplier is guessing, and on a vehicle with thinner supply the cost of getting it wrong is measured in weeks, not days.

Transmission type. Manual and automatic Preludes differ in flywheel, torque converter and transmission mounting points. A manual-transmission engine is not a direct replacement for an automatic car without addressing those components.

If you have the stamped engine code from the block, include it. It settles the variant in a way that the trim and year cannot always guarantee, particularly on a car that may have had engine work done in the past. The stamp is on the front of the H-series block, near the transmission bellhousing.

Identifying a H22A

  • The H-series code is stamped on the front face of the block, near the transmission bellhousing. This is the same location as the older B-series and D-series Honda engines.
  • The stamp reads as a family code plus a suffix: H22A1, H22A4, H23A1 and so on. The suffix determines the specification.
  • The H22A1 (fourth-generation Si/VTEC) and H22A4 (fifth-generation Type SH) differ in compression ratio and internal components. Verify the stamped code.

A seller describing an engine as a particular variant is making a checkable claim. Asking for a photograph of the stamp on the actual unit is not a sign of distrust; it is the normal way this gets confirmed.
