Toyota 4Runner Engine Guide

The 4Runner uses two fundamentally different V6 engines depending on generation, and the timing belt versus timing chain distinction defines the replacement conversation.

The Toyota 4Runner is one of the most common body-on-frame SUVs in the Phoenix market, and its engine replacement needs are shaped by two things: the engine families Toyota used and the desert climate that stresses cooling systems.

The third and fourth generation 4Runners used the 5VZ-FE, a 3.4 litre V6 with a timing belt. The fifth generation switched to the 1GR-FE, a 4.0 litre V6 with a timing chain. Those two engines have different maintenance profiles, different failure modes and different replacement considerations.

Understanding which generation you have, and what that means for the engine, is the starting point.

The 5VZ-FE: the timing belt engine

The 5VZ-FE is the engine that defines the third and fourth generation 4Runner. It is a 3.4 litre overhead-cam V6 that is generally reliable, but it is timing-belt driven, which means the belt and its associated components (tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump) need to be replaced on schedule.

In the Phoenix heat, the cooling system around the 5VZ-FE deserves particular attention. The water pump is belt-driven and is typically replaced along with the timing belt. A water pump failure on a 5VZ-FE in Phoenix traffic can overheat the engine quickly.

When sourcing a 5VZ-FE replacement, ask about the timing belt history of the donor engine. If the belt was recently replaced, that is a meaningful advantage. If the history is unknown, plan to replace the belt, tensioner and water pump during installation.

The 1GR-FE: the timing chain engine

The fifth generation 4Runner switched to the 1GR-FE, a 4.0 litre V6 with a timing chain rather than a belt. The chain is designed to last the life of the engine under normal conditions, which removes the scheduled belt replacement as a maintenance item.

The 1GR-FE is a different engine from the 5VZ-FE in every respect: different displacement, different architecture, different accessories and different engine management. The two are not interchangeable.

The 1GR-FE has its own set of considerations, including oil consumption on some production runs and the complexity of the VVT-i system. When sourcing a replacement, confirm the exact production date and any known issues for that run.

What to verify before ordering

  1. Generation. Second through fourth use the 5VZ-FE or 3VZ-E. Fifth uses the 1GR-FE. They are not interchangeable.
  2. On the 5VZ-FE, confirm the timing belt history. Replace during installation if unknown.
  3. Transmission type. The 4Runner was available with both manual and automatic transmissions, and the flywheel or flexplate differs.
  4. Drivetrain. The 4Runner was available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, which affects the front differential and the transfer case.
  5. On the 1GR-FE, confirm the exact variant. There are differences in the intake manifold and engine management across production years.
  6. Cooling system condition. In Phoenix, the cooling system is not optional maintenance. It is the primary defence against a second engine failure.

Common questions

Which 4Runner engine is more reliable?

Both are generally reliable with proper maintenance. The 5VZ-FE has a longer track record and a deeper replacement supply, but the timing belt is a scheduled maintenance item that must not be neglected. The 1GR-FE eliminates the belt but has its own considerations around oil consumption and VVT-i complexity. Reliability depends more on maintenance history than on which engine you have.

How often does the 5VZ-FE timing belt need to be replaced?

Toyota specifies replacement at 90,000-mile intervals. In Phoenix, where the cooling system works harder, some shops recommend shorter intervals. The belt, tensioner and water pump are typically replaced as a kit. If the replacement engine's belt history is unknown, replace it during installation.

Can I put a 1GR-FE in a third-generation 4Runner?
