Question

How Much Does a JDM Engine Cost?

A useful answer requires a specific engine and a specific vehicle. Without those, any price is a guess.

What actually determines the price

Factors that change what a JDM engine costs
FactorWhy it matters
Family and variantSome families are abundant and cheap. Others are thin in supply and command a premium. The variant within the family matters further: a K24A2 from a TSX is not the same market as a K24A1 from a CR-V.
Condition and verificationAn engine with compression test figures, photographs of the stamp and a clear donor history is worth more than one described only as "compression tested".
What is includedThe single largest source of apparent price difference. An engine with the intake manifold, sensors, harness and accessories attached is a fundamentally different purchase from a bare long block.
SourceJDM units from Japan have shipping and import costs that domestic salvage units do not. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends on the family and the availability.
Market availabilityFamilies with deep supply in the US are cheaper because there is competition. Families with thin supply carry a premium regardless of origin.

Why this site does not publish prices

A price without a specification of what is attached to it is not a useful number. Two suppliers quoting the same engine can differ by several hundred dollars and represent completely different purchases, because one includes the intake manifold and the other does not, or one includes a warranty with labour cover and the other does not.

Presenting a single price or a price range as though it were comparable would mislead more than it helped. The honest answer is that the price depends on the specific engine, in the specific condition, with the specific inclusions, and that information comes from a quote.

How to compare two quotes

  1. Get the exact inclusion list from each supplier. Which components are attached to the unit being shipped?
  2. Compare the warranty terms: duration, what is covered, whether labour is included, and what voids the cover.
  3. Ask whether the specific unit has been compression tested, and whether the figures are available.
  4. Confirm whether the quoted price includes delivery or whether that is separate.
  5. Ask what happens if the engine does not fit your vehicle. Some suppliers accept returns, others do not.

The labour cost people forget

Labour to remove and install an engine is a significant portion of the total job cost, and it is the same regardless of what the engine cost. That means the engine price is not the whole budget. A cheaper engine with no inclusions that require parts to be transferred can end up costing more once the additional parts and the additional labour are accounted for.

Getting a quote from your installer before you buy the engine is the cheapest way to understand the real total.

Common questions

What is the average price of a JDM engine?

There is no meaningful average, because the spread is too large. A common four-cylinder from abundant supply and a specific turbocharged six-cylinder with thin supply are different markets entirely. The price depends on the family, the variant, the condition and what is included. Get a quote for your specific vehicle.

Why are some JDM engines so much cheaper?

The most common reason is what is not included. A lower price often reflects a long block without the intake manifold, sensors, harness or accessories, all of which must then be sourced or transferred. The other reason is supply: families that are abundant in the US market cost less because there is competition.

Are JDM engines cheaper than USDM engines?

Not automatically. For families with deep US supply, domestic salvage can be cheaper once shipping is accounted for. For families where US supply is thin, JDM may be the more available and sometimes the more affordable option. Compare specific units, not categories.
