What Usually Comes With a JDM Engine?

The most common surprise on delivery day is what is missing. Almost all of it is avoidable with one question before payment.

The usual split

This is a general pattern rather than a rule. It is a starting point for the question you should ask, not a substitute for asking it.

The email to send before you pay

Ask these things in writing. A supplier who answers them clearly is easy to deal with later.

Exactly which components are attached to the unit you are shipping me?
Is the intake manifold included, and the exhaust manifold?
Are the sensors and harness included, or should I plan to transfer mine?
Is there anything on this engine that will need replacing before it can be installed?
Can you send photographs of the actual unit, from several angles?

Why this changes what a quote is worth

Two quotes on the same engine family can differ by several hundred dollars and represent completely different purchases. The cheaper one may exclude the intake manifold and sensors, which you then have to source or transfer at labour cost.

This is the main reason this site does not publish prices. A number without a specification of what is attached to it is not comparable to another number.

Common questions

Does a JDM engine come with the ECU?

Rarely as standard, though it is sometimes offered separately for Japanese-market units. Whether you need it depends on the engine and your vehicle. It is one of the things a fitment check establishes.

Do I need to transfer parts from my old engine?

Usually yes. Alternators, starters, pumps and often the harness come across. Plan for that as part of the installation, and do not scrap the old engine until the new one is in and running.
