Why Nissan CVTs fail
A continuously variable transmission uses a belt and pulley system rather than fixed gears. The design is efficient when it works and expensive when it does not. Nissan CVTs in the 2007 to 2012 era, particularly in the Altima, Murano and Maxima, had well-documented reliability issues that led to extended warranty programmes.
The failure modes include overheating, belt slippage and complete loss of drive. Symptoms can mimic engine trouble: a car that loses power or shudders under acceleration may be presenting a CVT problem, not an engine problem.
Why the engine and transmission are linked
The CVT and the engine are a matched pair in terms of the torque converter or coupling, the valve body calibration and the vehicle speed signal. A replacement engine has to be compatible with the existing CVT, and a replacement CVT has to be compatible with the engine.
On some Nissan applications, the CVT was updated across model years in ways that affect compatibility. A CVT from a 2008 Altima may not be directly interchangeable with one from a 2012, even though the engine is the same family.

What to do if you have a Nissan with a CVT
- Get a proper diagnosis before assuming the engine has failed. A CVT problem can present as engine trouble.
- If the CVT is also failing, decide whether to replace both at the same time. The labour overlap makes this significantly cheaper than doing them separately.
- If you are replacing only the engine, confirm the replacement is compatible with your specific CVT version.
- Ask your installer about the CVT's condition while the car is apart. The access is better with the engine out.
