Do JDM Engines Come With Transmissions?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and the answer depends on the engine family, the supplier and what you asked for.
When transmissions are included
Some suppliers ship engine-and-transmission assemblies as a unit, particularly on rear-wheel-drive families where the engine and transmission are a more integrated package. Toyota JZ engines, for example, are frequently offered as an assembly.
On front-wheel-drive vehicles, the engine and transmission separate more easily, and suppliers more commonly sell them independently. That does not mean the transmission is never included, but it means you have to ask.
When they are not
On many front-wheel-drive applications, the engine is removed and sold separately from the transmission. The transmission stays with the donor vehicle or is sold as a separate line item. This is particularly common on Honda K-series and D-series engines, and on Nissan QR and VQ families.
The assumption that the transmission is included is the single most common source of a surprise on delivery day. Asking explicitly and getting the answer in writing prevents it.
The Nissan CVT complication
On Nissan vehicles equipped with a CVT, the transmission question takes on additional significance. The CVT is a known weak point on several Nissan models, and the decision to replace the transmission alongside the engine is a separate and important one.
If the CVT is also failing, ordering an engine without addressing the transmission means doing the labour twice. If the CVT is sound, reusing it is the cheaper option, but it has to be confirmed compatible with the replacement engine.
Common questions
Should I replace the transmission at the same time as the engine?
If the transmission is also showing signs of wear, yes. The labour to remove and refit it overlaps almost entirely with the engine labour, so doing them together costs a fraction of doing them separately. If the transmission is sound, reusing it is the more economical choice. Your installer can advise.
Can I buy just the transmission?
Yes. Some suppliers sell transmissions independently. The matching requirements are the same: the transmission has to match the engine and the vehicle. Confirm compatibility before ordering.
